People don’t realise that concrete is not waterproof. Water can and does move through concrete floors or even your cement counter tops.

One of the most effective ways of waterproofing your concrete floors or countertops is actually to use epoxy! This is a highly underrated but effective sealer because it performs the following 3 roles so well:

1. It seals the pores of the concrete making it completely waterproof.

2. The gloss finish is very resistant to stains from both damp and oil based products.

3. It is extremely resistant to abrasions and cracks making it very hard for the seal to break in the future which would let moisture in.

If you are building in an area with waterlogged soils or renovating a part of your building that has had damp issues before, then when it comes to your final paint choice, prevention is better than cure!

We have told you about the dangers and damages that rising damp can bring to your life and your building. We also introduced you to Cemcrete’s Permastop which bonds with the cement to make a waterproof layer in your concrete.

As much as that is a great solution – it also involves a lot of work and you have to strip the building down to its ‘base layer.’

The truth is your rising damp may not be that bad and taking such drastic measures may not ALWAYS be necessary.

So what do you do if you have rising damp but you don’t think it necessary to go right down to the concrete level? Plascon produces the superb waterproof paint known as DAMPSEAL. In many ways, it does a similar job to Permastop because it reacts with the moisture to form a waterproof layer.

The difference though is you only have to strip away the paint level and it’s not necessary to go all the way down to the concrete.

A great option to consider if you have some damp, but it’s not threatening the building and your finishes too badly.

You might be watching water move uphill! Not literally up a hill but if you have mould, air bubbles, peeling paint and moisture appearing at the base of your walls, you are probably looking at RISING DAMP.

Rising damp is water moving up through concrete walls and it can have the following consequences:

1: It weakens the structural integrity of your building.

2: It destroys the wrong paint or coating you have used.

3: Mould formed by rising damp can worsen health symptoms for people with respiratory problems.

It’s a pretty serious issue and something that you cannot just leave and hope it goes away.
